Recently, the list of "the May 4th Youth Medal" of Hubei Province in 2022 was announced, and Professor Lou Xiaoding from our laboratory was in this list.

Professor Lou Xiaoding is the chief scientist from the Youth Program of the National Key R&D Plan, member of the 13th China Youth Federation and representative of the 12th Women's Congress of Hubei Province. Since Professor Lou began to work, she has undertaken and completed 10 provincial and ministerial projects, including the National Key R&D Plan, and obtained 7 national authorized invention patents. Meanwhile, as a young lecturer, she has engaged in the work at both provincial and university level to inspire younger generation to get more talented and innovative.

Concentrate on Scientific Researches and Exploration, Carry Forward the Striving Spirit

"Scientific research means something 'new', like synthesizing new molecules, developing new methods, inventing new devices and unlocking new skills." Lou Xiaoding said. She has a deep affection for scientific researches on chemistry.

From master's degree to doctor's degree, from an independent learner to a visiting scholar, she has been spreading her horizons of  knowledge. During her study, Lou Xiaoding published totally 12 papers in international academic journals. After graduation, she devoted herself to scientific researches. Since 2017 when she began to work in CUG, she has made innovative contributions to the design and application of multi-functional aggregates based on complex biological samples. Up to now, Lou Xiaoding has published over 130 SCI papers, and her researching results have been cited for more than 4600 times. She was spoken highly of by experts in the field worldwide, and she shared her reports on cutting-edge for many times at international academic seminars.

Focus on Women's Health, Overcome Difficulties in a targeted way

“Science and technology workers in the new era should take four things into their account: the world's scientific and technological frontier, China’s economic growth, the major national needs and people's livelihood and health. Professor Lou is making great contributions to women's health and social welfare.” Huang Ju, Secretary of the CPC committee of Faculty of Materials Science and Chemistry, said.

Lou Xiaoding looks into diseases and health problems from the perspective of life chemistry. For the lack of early screening methods for endometrial cancer, she has been exploring and built a kind of female-friendly tampon-type biosensor for instant detection. Tackling key problems requires precision and complicated process. Sometimes she has to stay in the laboratory for a week. In 2020, the national key R&D plan in her charge was approved by MST (Ministry of Science and Technology), and she became the first young teacher to be approved and funded by MST in CUG.

As a bosom friend, she guides students to a bright future

"Teacher Lou is not only a tutor on our way to scientific researches, but also an elder sister in daily life. Some students in the researching group got into financial difficulties, and she provided help through allowances for scientific researches" Jiang Wenlian, a postgraduate from Faculty of Materials Sciences and Chemistry, said. Jiang also added that when she first entered the campus, she was faced with some difficulties in scientific researches. After Professor Lou’s patient guidance, she found a sense of achievement from scientific researches, and now she resolutely chose to further her study as a PhD student.

As a young doctoral tutor in the laboratory of life chemistry, Lou Xiaoding gave full play to her leading role in teaching, led teachers and students to work hard together. With her company and help, each of her students can publish at least one high-level paper in international academic journals before graduation.

It is reported that young teachers from CUG have been awarded the "May 4th Youth Medal" of Hubei Province for two consecutive years. "May 4th Youth Medal" is an honor granted by Hubei Provincial Committee of the Communist Youth League and Hubei Youth Federation to outstanding youths aged from 14 to 40 in Hubei Province. It aims to reward young people with progressive ideas, noble morality and outstanding contributions, and to reflect the good spiritual value of contemporary youths.
